I had a VERY disturbing dinner at the Tulip last evening.
we were there early - 4:30ish and witnessed the son of the long time owner throw out a rather elderly man - because he came in alone and wanted to know why he wouldn't be seated - the waiter said it was policy that singles could not have a table during the dinner rush (there ware maybe 8 other tables occupied at the time) - the man, who was soft spoken & polite said he had been a customer for over 30 years and he didn't understand that policy - the owner came barrelling out of the kitchen and HOLLERED at him that it was "his damn restaurant and he could make any policy he dam well wanted and the man had to get out - right now".
I was so upset by that I couldn't eat - I approached the 'owner' and quietly said that I had been a customer of his parent's for as long as I could remember and that I thought his mother would have been appalled at the way he treated one of her customers. He yelled at me that I had no business interfering in his restaurant and that I had no right to talk about his mother that way (maybe he doesn't understand what appalled means) and then a woman who works started yelling at me that his mother was dead and that I was not good enough to eat in their restaurant and I had to pay my bill & get out!
Note, she said pay my bill!
We left and will never go back!

My Dad used to take me there for breakfast every Sat morning when I was growing up - I'm now retired and various friends & I have dinner there 2 or 3 times a month.
The old marketing thing - a happy customer comes back and an unhappy customer tells at least 20 people!
I wish this man luck with HIS restaurant.
Catherine

A good bet for hearty home cooking we go to is Tulip's - just east of Coxwell on Queen. It's a no frills steak place/diner/family restaurant but be prepared for a bit of a lineup during busy periods. Steaks are a good value but don't expect fancy sides or good wine. Their daily specials are always good - but some sell out if you go too late. The hot sandwiches are also delicious and huge - the hot beef sandwich and the open faced turkey.

The Tulip is a Toronto diner, known for their steak...which I have yet to try. However, I like to go for breakfast at least once every six weeks. I pretty much always order the peameal bacon and eggs (over easy) with homefries (which are under the bacon) a cup of coffee and a glass of water. Yum.

oh, Don't forget the loaf of bread.

last time i had the peppercorn striploin on friday and it was quite tasty. medium rare. normally I get either the New York Strip or the Tenderloin... can't go wrong with either.

Keep in mind the Tulip cooks all of their steaks on a griddle greasy spoon-style, as opposed to a grill. They all sort of come out the same ┬Ś cooked.

The answer is simple: The Tulip (Queen/Coxwell). Get the beef tenderloin cut. As a bonus, this place is very "old school" -- it's where all the cigar-chomping racetrack wagerers would go for steak or breakfast. Don't let the appearance fool you, the steak is excellent and in its price range, you will find nothing to compare! I'm a vegetarian, and on the very very very seldom occasion that I miss meat, this is the piece in question!

Probably the best steaks you will ever have - anywhere. We go at least once a month for the last 3 years since we discovered it.

The Tulip,Queen and Coxwell. Working class meat at working class prices. A 24 oz porter or T-bone for around $22.Seasoned and Fried on the flat top skillet, with mashed potato and slices of onion and tomato. Washed down with a cold mug of draft or a glass of Chateau Lake Erie.Fills the gap nice.

The Tulip has been an institution in the Beach since the beginning of time. It has great food, great service and if you like 'diner ambience', it will rival the comfort of your kitchen. Enjoy.

Lived near the Tulip for 6 years, and still go back. Never anything but great steak grilled to order. Have never bothered with most other items on menu, so can't comment.
